things aren't always what they seem

i drove in to work a little later than usual this morning. as i pulled off my freeway exit, i saw grey-bearded man, as i often do. but this time, he was standing next to an old red cadillac, parked down the street. by the opened passenger door, he was leaned over the wheelchair beside him, concentrating on attaching the american flag to the back handle. his tattered army jacket and cardboard "please help" sign were laid out neatly across the front hood of the car, like a businessman's coat and briefcase.
