i walked in to work this morning with a grey cloud of lightweight despair. i felt oddly cheated. no one i'd seen on my way to work -- not a single person -- had been wearing green for st. patrick's day. not a thread. i saw no green neckties. no four-leaf clovers. no fluffy green carnations pinned on lapels. not even a half-hearted army green jacket thrown on in the last moment, like me.

didn't anyone remember the pinching rule from grade school?

around 11 am, i walked into the lunch room. maybe a little coffee would cheer me up. but no sooner had the lunch room door shut behind me, there he was in front of me like a beacon of hope for all mankind. his large frame gorgeously hunched over a too-small formica table. thick fingers gripping and denting in the hood of an impressive pre-lunch sandwich. and on his back was the loudest, most obnoxious, greenest and most elating "kiss me, i'm irish!" t-shirt i've seen in a long, long time.

thank you, pre-lunch sandwich guy. thank you.
