there are moments at joshua tree that make you feel like you're in outer space. the desert shapes are otherworldly. yet there they are, on earth. and there you are--underneath the vast and heavy star-studded sky feeling as small as the smallest speck of dust. or squinting at a brilliant sun that dares you to open your eyes. or walking through rock formations more than 100 million years old, getting your breath taken away with every step.
so, very quietly with joyful shivers and numb fingertips, soothing earfuls of the winter desert wind and loveliness all around me, i turned a year older today.
