there are around a dozen people in the lunchroom at work. the main lights are out. the tv is on. and these dozen people are mostly standing, facing the set solemnly like mourners. probably on their way back to their desks. steaming styrofoam cups in hand with skinny red stirrers sticking out.

there is catholic-church silence in the room except for unintelligible mumbling from the tv. apparently a reporter has called into the news station from kuwait city. on the screen, there are unnaturally greenish lights streaming and bursting across a black sky. and according to the letters moving from left to right across the bottom of the screen, it's 9:24 pm and a "shock & awe" campaign is currently under way in baghdad.

(who names these things?)
