today feels. strange. like an oversized suit. like abundant fabric falling off my shoulders and loose pant legs sweeping against the floor. like i draped my skin over my body this morning and clipped it on with bobby pins.

i’m back at work after being out sick with a nasty cold for two days. and if you count the annoying-more-than-anything hangover on sunday, that’s three long, weary days. as the day advances, the forces of gravity are getting progressively stronger. and i start thinking that i’d probably rather be sick than be at work. (a bad sign.) so i should’ve probably stayed in bed today.

it’s especially strange to plug yourself into work in the middle of the week. the mechanism’s been in gear for a few days and everyone’s already planted their heels into their cubicles with headphones on. the only chatter i’ve heard so far are two male coworkers quietly discussing the progress of their atkins diets. and although i can’t say it’s exactly like two model-thin teenage girls foolishly plotting to starve themselves for a week so they can fit into their undersized prom dresses—i can’t say it’s too dissimilar.

and finally, my brain is recovering from its reckless overactivity from the night before. i dreamt that my strictly conservative grandparents from toronto had moved into my apartment (horror!), that my friend maggie’s leg had been severely burned by some stranger’s motorcycle, that a 90-year-old movie usher was charging me $309 to see a movie i didn't really want to see, and that my boyfriend was putting his arms around me like wings of a mother bird.
